Breathwork That Fits Real Life: Nervous System Tech and Conscious Computing
Vayu co-founder Dhruv Adhia joins the Bee Formless™ podcast to discuss how technology can help us breathe better, live calmer, and reconnect with our bodies in an increasingly distracted world.
In a recent episode of the Bee Formless™ podcast, hosted by Belinda Murray, Vayu co-founder Dhruv Adhia shared the vision behind our breathing app and explored how technology—often blamed for our stress—can actually become a tool for healing.
The Problem: Technology That Disconnects Us
We live in an age of constant notifications, endless scrolling, and digital overwhelm. Our devices demand our attention, fragmenting our focus and keeping our nervous systems in a state of perpetual activation. But what if the same technology could help us find calm?
“Most apps are designed to capture your attention and keep you engaged,” Dhruv explained during the conversation. “We wanted to create something different—an app that helps you disconnect, find your breath, and return to yourself.”
Conscious Computing: A New Paradigm
Central to the discussion was the concept of conscious computing—the idea that technology should serve our wellbeing rather than exploit our attention. This philosophy drives everything we build at Vayu.
Rather than adding more features, more notifications, and more reasons to stay glued to your screen, Vayu embraces a subtraction philosophy. Less is more. The goal isn’t to keep you in the app—it’s to help you breathe, feel better, and get back to living your life.
“We measure success not by how long people spend in our app, but by how quickly they can achieve a state of calm and move on with their day.”
Why Haptic Feedback Changes Everything
One of the unique aspects of Vayu that Dhruv discussed is our use of haptic feedback on smartwatches. Traditional breathing apps require you to watch your screen, which can feel counterintuitive when you’re trying to relax and close your eyes.
With Vayu on Apple Watch or Wear OS devices, gentle vibrations guide your breath:
- Inhale – Feel a gentle pulse as you breathe in
- Hold – A steady presence reminds you to pause
- Exhale – Soft vibrations guide your breath out
This allows for eyes-closed breathwork—a more meditative, embodied experience that doesn’t require staring at a screen.
The Science: Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
The conversation dove deep into the science behind breathwork, particularly Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats and is a key indicator of nervous system health and resilience.
Higher HRV is associated with:
- Better stress resilience
- Improved emotional regulation
- Enhanced cognitive performance
- Stronger overall health markers
Controlled breathing exercises, like Box Breathing and the 4-7-8 technique available in Vayu, have been shown to increase HRV and shift the nervous system from a stressed “fight or flight” state to a calmer “rest and digest” mode.
Box Breathing: A Simple Practice with Profound Effects
During the podcast, Dhruv led listeners through a Box Breathing demonstration—one of the most popular techniques in the Vayu app. Also known as “square breathing,” this technique involves:
- Inhale for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
- Exhale for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
- Repeat
This simple pattern, used by Navy SEALs and first responders, can rapidly shift your physiological state and bring clarity in moments of stress.
A Vision to Touch a Billion Lives
Perhaps the most inspiring part of the conversation was Dhruv’s articulation of Vayu’s mission: to touch a billion lives through better breathing.
“Breath is universal,” Dhruv shared. “Every human on Earth breathes. It’s the one thing that connects all of us, regardless of culture, language, or background. If we can help even a fraction of the world breathe more consciously, the ripple effects on global wellbeing could be enormous.”
Now Available on Android
The podcast also marked an exciting announcement: Vayu is now available on Android and Wear OS. What started as an iOS and Apple Watch app has expanded to reach millions more users who can now experience guided breathwork with haptic feedback on their Android devices.
