Radin and colleagues (2025), published in JAMA Network Open 8(1):e2454435, ran a randomized controlled trial of N=1,458 University of California, San Francisco employees. Participants used an 8 week digital mindfulness program, and the trial measured a large reduction in perceived stress: Cohen's d = 0.85 (95% CI 0.73 to 0.96). An effect size of 0.85 is substantial. It is roughly the difference between the average person and someone at the 80th percentile of stress reduction, achieved through a brief daily digital practice rather than a clinic visit.
Read that result carefully, because the caveats matter as much as the number. This trial tested a digital mindfulness program, not breathwork, and it was funded by the maker of that program (Headspace). It was single-site and 80.8 percent female. The strongest RCT here is not breathwork-specific. The Radin et al. It was also funded by the program's maker (Headspace), conducted at a single site, and skewed heavily female (80.8 percent), all of which limit how far the result generalizes. We include it because it is high-quality adjacent evidence that brief digital mind-body tools work, and we would be overselling if we implied it validated breathing specifically.
